hiring manager may consider other locations in North or South
Carolina. The exact location will be determined at the time of
offer based on business needs.Job SummaryThe Environmental Health &
Safety attorney will be responsible for providing legal guidance on
environmental, health & safety (EHS) issues across the Duke Energy
enterprise. This is a mid-level associate attorney position.
Although prior experience in supporting environmental matters or
with administrative law is desired, it is not required.This
position requires independent judgment and frequent client contact
under the general direction of the Deputy General Counsel. From
time to time, more discrete matters may be managed by an Associate
General Counsel. High quality and timely legal advice and counsel
in support of the business unit or legal practice area is required.
The successful candidate must possess proficient oral and written
communication skills and develop relationships with clients to
ensure client communication and responsiveness. In addition,
responsiveness and teamwork within the Office of General Counsel,
as well as a dedication to continuously developing knowledge of the
Company and industry, is necessary.Attorney-assigned responsibility
for routine legal matters include primarily EHS, but can also
include general corporate matters, contracts and transactions, and
litigation support.This position is hybrid, which includes a mix of
onsite and remote work. Occasional travel is
required.Responsibilities
- Provide counsel to Company on environmental matters to ensure
compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Interpret state and federal laws and regulations on air, water,
and waste matters as well as other environmental issues, to ensure
timely compliance to avoid unnecessary expenditures.
- Stay abreast of legal developments, regulatory changes, and
court interpretations.
- Participate in and provide legal advice, as needed, in support
of new and existing generating facilities.
- Advise on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
issues, including handling inspections, attending informal
conferences, and defending citations.
- Provide quality, timely legal advice to management for
day-to-day matters and major ongoing legal projects that fall
within the incumbent's realm of expertise.
- Research and draft legal documents, such as legal memoranda,
contracts, corporate governance documents or other legal documents,
and assist with negotiations.
- Work to establish professional relationships within the Company
related to areas of subject matter expertise.
- Contribute to projects of significant importance to the Company
from a risk, monetary, or policy perspective. Work with and at the
direction of the leader in the department.
- Consult with Associate General Counsel and Deputy General
Counsel on legal issues with significant value or which may have
economic, political, or media implications for the Company.
- Monitor legal developments, legislation, and pending
legislation promulgated by the federal government and the states in
which the Company does business, to assess and advise
implementation of and compliance with new laws and regulations.
Stay abreast of interpretations adversely affecting current methods
of operations.
- Maintain job-related technical knowledge and skills and
in-depth knowledge of issues relating to the utility industry.
- Lead and/or serve on committees, special projects, or other
assignments as directed to further departmental
goals.Basic/Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) degree from an accredited law
school.
- In addition to degree, two (2) years minimum of experience
practicing law.
- Actively licensed to practice law in any state in the United
States.Desired Qualifications
- Strong written & verbal communication skills.
- 2 years minimum of experience practicing environmental or
administrative law.
- Experience handling matters for public utility companies.
- Proven effective research and writing skills.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Basic understanding of electricity production.
- Licensed to practice law in North Carolina.
- Experience with Clean Air Act issues.
- Experience with Clean Water Act issues.
- Experience with coal ash or EPA's Coal Combustion Residuals
rule.
- Experience with solid and hazardous waste issues.
- Experience with natural resources issues and the National
Environmental Policy Act.
- Experience with federal and state environmental
permitting.
- Experience analyzing complex matters and reducing them to
manageable products and communications.
- Sound judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Ability to work as a part of a team of other lawyers and
business people.
- Previous experience handling litigation matters.
- Experience drafting legal pleadings.Working Conditions
- M - F, 2 - 3 days per week onsite.
- Occasional travel.
- Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from
both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period.
However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily
